Ballet. Like a sport. Only Harder.
One of the first designs I created, back in 2007 when this print-on-demand adventure started, is “Ballet. Like a Sport. Only Harder.” I was proud of myself for learning to create a design with a transparent background, so it would look great on a shirt. I also quickly learned that I needed a version with white text to be able to print on black shirts. After lots of tutorials and trial and error, I posted my first dance design and started my Dancethoughts stores.

Over the years, shirts with “Ballet-Like a Sport. Only Harder.” on them have been sent to dancers in all 50 states in the United States. They have been ordered from as far away as Australia, Great Britain, and New Zealand. It is amazing to me that this little ballet dance design is so far reaching and resonates with dancers all over the world.
Dancers are the hardest working athletes I know. They train tirelessly 5-6 days per week, never taking breaks, always striving to be better than they were yesterday. Minutes spent on stage are earned with months of rehearsals, and careers are hard won and low paying compared to others who train so hard physically. There is truth in my favorite design – Ballet is harder than a sport. Dancers are not just athletes, they are artists. They must make the hard work look effortless, and that is the greatest gift they can give their audience.
I am still teaching dance, and traveling up and down the East Coast with my school. I am always looking through the crowds to see if I can spot one of my dance designs on a dancer, dance parent, or dance teacher. It is such a thrill when I see one! It has only happened a few times, but I will keep scanning the crowds as we head out to perform with other dancers again this season.
